Have you ever wondered how hard can it be to restore old analog car clock to its previous glory?
After I had bought our TA22 I was wondering how many devices installed inside have failed through the 41 years. For example roof light switch is blocked and I will have to take a look at it one day. Same thing happened to clock. It looked broken and dirty.
When undertaking first minor disassembly I decided to take the clock out and check what's wrong with it.
That's how it looked after removing from car. |
And here's the backside. |
My plan was to take apart the housing, clean it, clean the internals, if something would be broken try to mend it or handle it to a watchmaker.
I was more than amazed after opening the housing! Just take a look below.
Top housing removed. |
Super-clean internals. |
Every cog and gearwheel looks like new. |
Silky smooth clock face. |
The glue on the side looks like a sealing, but I have no idea what kind of glue is it. |
As you can see from the pictures above - the internals didn't need any care or repair. Everything was mounted properly on its place, cogs are rolling smooth.
In that case I took care of housing and lighting.
The lighting is ensured by small bulb installed in the backside of housing. It spreads the light more on cogwheels than anywhere else, but the upper housing has reflective layer that helps the light to spread evenly over the clock face.
Here is the bulb socket on the positive cable. |
The bulb is BA9S 2W.
I wonder if I can change it to higher power output. LED would be much brighter but I don't want to interfere with original design. |
The bottom housing needed only cleaning wipe and looks mint, but the top chromed part with plastic glass was dirty, scratched, oxidated and needed more care.
Firstly, I put it to the hot water with mild detergent. After over a dozen minutes I took it out of this bath and cleaned with sponge. The dirt was gone ;) Now it was only matter of scratches. and oxidation. I decided to use low aggressive polishing compound from Poorboy's. It works great with chromes and plastics so it matched to the task pretty well.
Here's the compound I used. |
Here are the pictures before and after polishing.
Before and after polishing - crystal clear glass and lustrous chrome on the right side. |
After polishing the housing I put it all back together, placed the new bulb inside and here's the final effect. Compare it to the picture at the beginning of the post. Clock on the one below looks like new - straight from manufacturer.
Totally new, some might say. |
And here's the short video showing how it works after attaching it to 12V ;)
Remember to visit us next week for next part of TA22 restoration process :)
